17 Weeks Pregnant

What changes are occurring with your body at 17 Weeks Pregnant?

As your abdomen continues to grow at 17 weeks pregnant, other organs will move around to compensate for the growth of your uterus and baby. The top of your uterus is beginning to appear more rounded and is lengthening. Your uterus will begin pushing your intestines up and out towards the side of your abdomen. Most women find it easier to feel their uterus when they are standing. If you lie down and try to feel your uterus, it can be quite difficult since it falls back towards your spine.

How big is your baby at 17 weeks pregnant?

Your baby is a little over 5 ¾ inches (14 ½ cm) long and weighs 4 ounces (.11 kg).

What is happening with your baby?

Your baby’s umbilical cord is not only lengthening but also becoming thicker and stronger for these last 23 weeks. Your baby’s sense of hearing is also developing as the ears have fully formed and moved into their final position. At 17 weeks pregnant, your baby is beginning to form adipose or fat tissue. This will help fill out the fine features that your baby has. Fat is also important in helping regulate the body’s temperature and metabolism.

What should you plan for during the 17th week of pregnancy?

During the course of your pregnancy, you may have noticed that your allergies seem to flare up more than before. This is a normal part of pregnancy; however, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider before taking a prescription or over-the-counter medication. There are safe medications to use if your allergies interfere with your daily routine, but first ask your provider what is recommended during pregnancy.

Tips for making your pregnancy better

You may have noticed that you have periodic pain in your legs. This is called sciatic nerve pain. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, running under your uterus to your legs and providing the sensory and motor function to the lower extremities. Sciatic nerve pain is thought to be caused by your developing baby putting pressure on the nerve.

Tips for mom’s partner

Many times couples wonder how they are going to afford to raise a child. However, a little planning can make certain parts of parenting a bit easier. You might want to look into beginning a college fund for your son or daughter. This might not completely pay for college, but 18 or so years down the road you will be glad that you started planning early.
