As your abdomen continues to grow at 17 weeks pregnant, other organs will move around to compensate for the growth of your uterus and baby. The top of your uterus is beginning to appear more rounded and is lengthening. Your uterus will begin pushing your intestines up and out towards the side of your abdomen. Most women find it easier to feel their uterus when they are standing. If you lie down and try to feel your uterus, it can be quite difficult since it falls back towards your spine.<\/p>\n
Your baby is a little over 5 \u00be inches (14 \u00bd cm)<\/strong> long<\/strong> and weighs 4 ounces (.11 kg)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Your baby’s umbilical cord is not only lengthening but also becoming thicker and stronger for these last 23 weeks. Your baby\u2019s sense of hearing is also developing as the ears have fully formed and moved into their final position. Fat is also important in helping regulate the body\u2019s temperature and metabolism.<\/p>\n During the course of your pregnancy, you may have noticed that your allergies seem to flare up more than before. This is a normal part of pregnancy; however, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider before taking a prescription or over-the-counter medication<\/a>. There are safe medications<\/a> to use if your allergies interfere with your daily routine, but first ask your provider what is recommended during pregnancy.<\/p>\n You may have noticed that you have periodic pain in your legs. This is called sciatic nerve pain<\/a>. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, running under your uterus to your legs and providing the sensory and motor function to the lower extremities. Sciatic nerve pain is thought to be caused by your developing baby putting pressure on the nerve.<\/p>\n Many times couples wonder how they are going to afford to raise a child. However, a little planning can make certain parts of parenting a bit easier. You might want to look into beginning a college fund for your son or daughter.
